BMJ article questioning exclusive breastfeeding to six months

An article published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) is being reported in the media as questioning whether exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months is appropriate for UK babies. 

Baby Café Statement: The Baby Café has always been mother-led. Information and support for breastfeeding and timely introduction of complementary food is
given on an individual basis taking into consideration many factors including developmental readiness.

The Big Lottery Fund and ITV, with the approval of Buckingham Palace, will be helping to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 with 60 Lottery grants.

Community groups will be able to apply for up to £60,000 from a total of £3.6million. The funded projects will inspire, involve or improve the local communities they live in. Finalists will be showcased on ITV regional news when the public will vote for the projects they want to receive the Lottery funding.

Croydon Health Services Award

Croydon University Hospital's maternity services has been awarded two certificates of commitment from UNICEF for encouraging mothers to breastfeed their babies. The award recognises that the hospital is dedicated to advising mothers breastfeeding helps protect babies against illnesses such as stomach bugs and allergies.

The maternity services have opened three Baby Cafe drop-ins in Croydon during 2010 with more planned to open soon. 

Baby Café and NCT agree to merge

Our tenth year marks a momentous turning point in the Baby Café Charitable Trust's development. The Trustees are delighted to announce that The Baby Café is to join NCT to provide professionally led breastfeeding drop-ins throughout the UK.

The Boards of Trustees of The Baby Café Charitable Trust and NCT have spent several months exploring the feasibility of the two Charities merging. The benefits for The Baby Café are:

  • Access to resources to support our existing network;
  • Investment and support to grow the network;
  • Increased joint working within the NHS;
  • Improved partnership working across the third sector.
