What is a Baby Café?
A Baby Café drop-in centre is generally open once a week and set out with coffee tables, comfy sofas and play areas for accompanying toddlers. All pregnant or breastfeeding mums are welcome to drop in at any time during opening hours. No appointment is necessary and partners, supporters and health professionals are also welcome. Baby Café drop-ins may be facilitated by midwives, health visitors, lactation consultants or breastfeeding counsellors from the voluntary breastfeeding organisations. Many have peer supporters on hand and some operate their own peer supporter training programmes. Funding can come from a variety of sources such as Primary Care Trusts, Sure Start programmes, community funds or grants. Locations vary from church halls and community centres to a fire station! There is even a mobile Baby Café operating from a bus. Help is available on all aspects of breastfeeding and its impact on daily life - from starting to stopping and all the variations in between.
Our name and trade mark is "The Baby Café". All genuine Baby Café drop-in centres which are registered with us are listed on this website, and you can expect all these to be run to the same high standards. Any other drop-ins purporting to be Baby Café drop-ins are using the name without our authorisation. Those who decide to set up a drop-in using The Baby Café name, logo and associated model of care and standards have access to the national support structure of a charitable trust. The Baby Café brand has an international profile as an innovative, imaginative and accessible way of delivering healthcare in the 21st century.
