More than sixty
people attended the first Baby Café Conference, entitled 'If We Could
Talk to the Animals,' which took place at Woburn Safari Park on 29th
September. It was the perfect opportunity to share ideas and learn more
about the Baby Café initiative.
Guest speakers included Dr. Mike Woolridge from Leeds University, who
talked about social structures that support breastfeeding, and Gillian
Weaver from the UK Association of Milk Banking. We were delighted to
welcome Maxine Hooker, from the Hawke's Bay Baby Café New Zealand, who
spoke about the successful launch of The Baby Café in New Zealand.
Conference delegates enjoyed the somewhat unusual opportunity to feed the
lemurs. Shown here 'talking to the animals' are guest speaker
Gillian Weaver (left) with Catherine Pardoe, National Baby Café
Coordinator.

officially opened the Baby Café and MP Sally Keeble also attended.
Interviews were broadcast by BBC Radio Northampton and the local commercial
radio station. Everyone enjoyed a buffet lunch and specially
made cake. A local toy manufacturer donated cuddly toys to give out the
babies and a local toy shop handed out discount vouchers to the mums and

August 2004
|
 |
During World Breastfeeding Week in August 80 people from all sectors
of the community attended the launch of Hawke's
Bay Baby Café, the first to open in New Zealand, and the
first registered Baby Café outside the UK. The launch party was a
great success with the local mayor, Hawkes Bay District Health Board CEO
Chris Clark and Parents Centre New Zealand CEO Viv Gurrey all speaking.
A sculpture was unveiled and the cake cut. Katie Askew, President
of Napier Parents Centre and the Hawke's Bay Baby Café Project Leader
described the show of health community support as overwhelming.
Earlier in the week The Baby Café held an afternoon tea for mums and
babies at a local café, the first event in a promotion planned for the
next year towards the '2005 World Breastfeeding Week Baby Friendly Community
Initiative'. By inviting the local mayor and press they were able
to raise community awareness of the importance of providing
breastfeeding-friendly venues.

Breast
isn't best, bakers told mums 7th January 2004
|
Newcastle's
Westgate
Baby Café hit the local news when they planned to throw a party for their
launch. According to the Newcastle Evening
Chronicle, "...when
(the Baby Café) asked Asda in Gateshead's MetroCentre to make a
cake iced with a breastfeeding woman (the Baby Café logo!) for the
celebration it was turned away by staff, who branded the idea 'offensive'."
Heather Neil, a National Childbirth Trust breastfeeding adviser who helped
set up Westgate Baby Café, told the newspaper, "The logo itself is very
stylised, tasteful and shows just a hint of cleavage...it's worrying that
Asda staff reacted like this and gave the impression there's something
wrong with breastfeeding."
According to the Chronicle, the problem was resolved when an Asda
spokesman said, "...obviously common sense has to prevail and this
was a misunderstanding. We...would be happy for them to bring it
back and we'll make them a free cake."
The Westgate Baby Café launch is on Monday 12th January from 1pm to 3pm. |
